Keywords in English

Ecological Urbanism reconciles nature and cities, considering potentialities and natural resources in urban areas. Green areas extrapolate the function of beautification and improvement of visual and environmental quality, engineering artifacts, and elements of a high-performance green infrastructure. Streetscapes have added value and scale by connecting remnants of urban forests and scattered green areas in the urban fabric. The results of the research change the look on the river floodplain. Neglected in the contemporary city, in Ecological Urbanism, the river floodplains become structural elements and connectors of the urban network of great value. The hypothesis is based on the implementation of Ecological Urbanism principles in São Paulo through a broad process and tools ranging from public policies, private initiative actions, and community involvement, resulting in environmental quality and urban life improvement. The research focuses on Itaquera, a neighborhood impacted by massive urban facilities, the new soccer stadium of Corinthians Sports Club, built for the 2014 World Cup Games. Through field surveys, mappings, and analysis of case studies in the United States and South Africa, the a clear opportunity for transformation. around the arena is identified from the application of ecological principles. Finally, the research presents a proposal of Ecological Urbanism for the surroundings of the Corinthians Arena, based on local potentialities, green areas, hydrology, and new dynamics resulting from new public and private investments.
